German police say that the most recent search for Madeleine McCann was “very constructive” because they found clothes, bones, and two guns in a remote part of Portugal. The search, which took place near Praia da Luz, focused on rough terrain that Christian Brueckner calls his “rat run,” where the main suspect is thought to have camped out before.
The things that were found have been sent for forensic investigation, which has led to speculation that they could connect Brueckner to the disappearance of Madeleine in 2007. Hans Christian Wolters, the head prosecutor in Braunschweig, was unusually hopeful about the case, saying that the probe might be close to making a big breakthrough.
The Search and the Investigation
Police employed heavy machinery and ground-penetrating radar to search the area.
Brueckner, who is now 48, is serving a seven-year term in Germany for raping a lady in Praia da Luz in 2005.
What the Results Mean
Finding the things has given people hope that the case would be solved shortly. Prosecutors may have a hard time getting the warrant they need to hold Brueckner in jail, though, if they don’t have any forensic evidence linking him to the case. Unless fresh evidence comes to light, Brueckner will be let go in September 2025.
