A Piece of Humble Pie: A Lesson in Being Calm and Kind

Every night at our family’s restaurant, the warm glow of the oven and the buzz of talk filled the air. But everything changed when a woman walked in huffing and puffing. Her fancy coat and angry face made the calm environment stand out. She clenched a pizza box tight and yelled for the boss, her eyes burning with anger.

Behind the counter, my grandma, who was always cool, gave the woman a quiet nod to show that she understood what she was asking. The woman quickly went on a rant about how we “ruined her order” and how she would “never eat here again.” Her comments and threats hung in the air, making everyone feel bad.

I tried to step in and help, but the woman turned around and gave me a mean look. Then my grandma put a soft hand on my arm. Her calmness was a sign of hope in the chaos. With a calm voice, she said, “You look very upset, dear.” But I believe there may be a mess up.”

When my grandma showed her the name on the pizza box, the woman’s anger faded and her eyes lit up with surprise. Our pizza was not that one. When the woman realised what she had done, her face lost all colour, and she ran out of the pizzeria and slammed the door behind her.

There was laughter all around, and I couldn’t help but laugh too. My grandma smiled, and her eyes lit up with happiness. It was clear that this was not the first time she had dealt with an unreasonable customer, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last.

I learnt an important lesson from my grandmother as I watched the woman run away with the pizza box tightly held to her chest. Being calm is much stronger than being angry in times of chaos. When told with care and kindness, the truth can break through any stress like nothing else.

Thinking about that night made me realise that sometimes the best way to deal with an illogical storm is to stand your ground and let it go. Even better if the truth comes hot and topped with cheese and pepperoni. That’s just bad luck in a pizza box.
