In a poignant display of compassion and kindness, a hospice team in Connecticut granted a dying woman’s final wish to see her beloved horse one last time. Karina Courtmanche, a 79-year-old woman from Bethany, had been receiving hospice care and didn’t have long to live. Her one remaining desire was to be reunited with her cherished horse, Bella.
Karina’s bond with Bella was unbreakable, spanning decades since the horse was a foal. As her condition worsened, Karina expressed her heartfelt longing to see Bella again to Michelle Walker, her RN Case Manager at Connecticut Hospice. Walker and the nursing home staff were determined to make this reunion a reality.
Given Karina’s fragile state, the team arranged for her to be transported to Bittersweet Farm, where Bella was stabled, via ambulance. This ensured that Karina would have a stretcher and immediate medical attention available throughout the visit.
The emotional reunion between Karina and Bella was a moment of pure joy. Despite her weakened state, Karina was able to feed Bella carrots and lovingly rub her nose. Walker described the experience as “incredibly moving” and emphasized the importance of fulfilling Karina’s final wish.
As Karina’s life draws to a close, she can take comfort in knowing that Bella will continue to be cared for at Bittersweet Farm. This heartwarming story serves as a testament to the power of compassion and the importance of honoring the wishes of those nearing the end of their life.
