A devastating plane crash near Ronald Reagan National Airport on January 29, 2025, shook the nation, claiming the lives of 67 passengers, including several members of the U.S. figure skating community. Among the victims were young and talented skaters, whose lives were cut short in the prime of their youth.
The Livingston family, including parents Peter and Donna, and their two daughters, Everly, 14, and Alydia, 11, were among those who perished in the crash. The sisters, known as the “Ice Skating Sisters,” were passionate figure skaters who trained at the Ashburn Ice House in Virginia. Their Instagram posts showcased their dedication to the sport, and their dreams of competing at the national level.
Just days before the crash, Everly and Alydia posted a photo from a championship event, captioned: “We were born ready for this.” Everly’s ambitions were clear: she wanted to be part of Team USA and travel the world. Her sister Alydia shared her passion, and together they inspired countless young skaters.
The Beyer family also suffered a heartbreaking loss in the crash. Justyna Beyer, 42, and her 12-year-old daughter, Brielle, were among the victims. Brielle had just celebrated her birthday and was an aspiring figure skater. Her father, Andy Beyer, spoke out about the profound love they shared as a family, and the devastating loss they had suffered.
Other victims of the crash included 16-year-old Edward Zhou, a talented and compassionate skater, and his parents. Edward’s coach, Sandra Sparger, remembered him fondly, saying: “He was a wonderful young man with a bright future ahead.” The Haynos family, including Roger, Stephanie, and their 16-year-old son, Cory, also perished in the crash. Cory was a talented skater who had recently achieved a clean triple Axel.
The skating community has come together to mourn the loss of these talented young skaters and their families. The Ashburn Ice House released a statement, saying: “Our heartfelt condolences go out to all affected. The figure skating community is a close-knit, worldwide family, and our hearts are broken.”
A benefit figure skating event, “Legacy on Ice,” is scheduled for March 2 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The event will feature performances by top U.S. skaters, including Ilia Malinin, Amber Glenn, and Alysa Liu. All proceeds will go towards supporting the affected families.
As the skating community comes together to support each other in this time of grief, we remember the victims of the Washington plane crash and honor their legacy. Their memories will continue to inspire and remind us of the fragility of life.
