Ahmed al-Ahmed, the man who tackled and disarmed a gunman during the deadly Bondi Beach attack, has spoken from his hospital bed, offering thanks and revealing the personal toll of his bravery. In an emotional video message, the 43-year-old said, “I appreciate the efforts of everyone. May Allah reward you and grant you wellbeing. God willing, we will return to you with joy.” He added a more private note, explaining, “I went through a very difficult phase, only Allah knows it,” and asking for his mother’s prayers.

His “difficult phase” refers to the moments when he risked everything. Captured on video, al-Ahmed is seen moving strategically during the attack, which targeted a Hanukkah event, before engaging one of the alleged shooters in a physical struggle and taking his weapon. He was shot twice in the process and remains hospitalized, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noting he faces more surgery. His actions amid the chaos, which left 15 dead, are viewed as critically important in stopping the violence.
