The world was left stunned when the bodies of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were discovered at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The investigation into their deaths has been ongoing, and now, a close friend of the couple has shed light on the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding their passing.
Gene Hackman, a two-time Oscar-winning actor, had been living with Alzheimer’s disease, which had progressed to the point where he was unable to perform simple tasks. His wife, Betsy, had become his primary caregiver, managing their household and ensuring his safety.
Tragically, Betsy contracted Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, a rare and often fatal illness, from exposure to rodent droppings or urine. She passed away, leaving Gene alone and disoriented in their home. Due to his advanced Alzheimer’s, Gene was unaware of his wife’s death and was unable to seek help.
A close friend of the couple, Tom Allin, has revealed that Gene didn’t own a phone and was “uninterested in technology,” which meant he had no way of calling for help, even if he had wanted to. This sad reality highlights the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s disease and the importance of support and care for those affected.
The investigation into the couple’s deaths has confirmed that they both died of natural causes, with Betsy’s death likely occurring on or around February 11. Gene’s body was discovered days later, along with their dog, Zinna, who had also passed away.
As the world mourns the loss of a Hollywood icon, we are reminded of the importance of compassion, care, and support for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other debilitating illnesses. Rest in peace, Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa.
