In the 1960s and 1970s, Bobby Sherman was the epitome of a teen heartthrob. With his charming smile and captivating voice, he won the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. But despite his immense success, Sherman made a surprising decision that would change the course of his life forever.
Born on July 22, 1943, in Santa Monica, California, Sherman grew up with a passion for music. He began playing the trumpet at age 11 and later learned to play the piano, trombone, and guitar. After high school, he attended Pierce College, where he met his first wife, Patti Carnel.
Sherman’s big break came when he was discovered at a Hollywood party, where he sang Ray Charles’ “What I’d Say” in front of a crowd of celebrities. His talent caught the attention of Sal Mineo, who took him under his wing and helped launch his career.
As Sherman’s fame grew, so did his family. He and Patti had two sons, Christopher and Tyler, and Sherman became determined to provide them with a stable and loving home. However, his grueling schedule as a teen idol took a toll on his personal life.
Despite his success, Sherman felt unfulfilled and disconnected from his family. He began to reevaluate his priorities and eventually made the shocking decision to leave the entertainment industry behind.
Sherman’s new passion was saving lives. He became an emergency medical technician (EMT) and later a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. He even delivered five babies in the field and showed remarkable bravery during the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
As Sherman looked back on his career, he realized that his fans had given him the opportunity to pursue his true passions. He expressed his gratitude to them, saying, “What I’ve done with my life, and what I’ve been able to accomplish, all comes down to the fact that I’ve been blessed by the fans.”
Today, Sherman is 80 years old and still going strong. He married his second wife, Brigette, in 2011, and they founded The Brigitte and Bobby Sherman Children’s Foundation, a youth center in Ghana that combines music and education.
Sherman’s story is a testament to the power of following one’s heart and pursuing a life of purpose. He may have traded in his fame for a life of service, but his legacy as a talented entertainer and devoted public servant will never be forgotten.
