I had always been proud of being independent and having a life that I could plan and control. That is, until I found a scared little girl sitting in my shopping cart, saying, “Don’t give me back, I’m scared.” Everything changed at that moment.
Melissa wasn’t sure about taking in a child and was scared about what might happen, but I knew I had to help Lily.
I called my friend James, a detective, to help me figure out where Lily came from while I tried to calm her down. But before we could do anything, social services showed up and took Lily away. Though it broke my heart, I knew I had to help Lily and her family.
James found out that Lily had fled from home more than once, but her parents had always caught her and led her back. I chose to do something about it myself and go see Lily’s parents. The scene I found broke my heart: a neglected house, a mother who was about to lose it all, and a heavy sadness in the air.
Gloria, Lily’s mum, was tired and couldn’t do anything, but as we talked, I saw a sign of hope. Even though she loved Lily, she could no longer take care of her. I chose to leave Gloria to get better while I took care of Lily for a short time.
We made a plan with the help of social providers. Gloria’s growth would be looked at again in a few months, and Lily would stay with me. I knew it was the right choice, even though it wasn’t easy.
I learnt that this little girl had changed me in ways I never thought possible as Lily got used to her new routine. She gave me happiness and a reason to live, and I knew I would do anything to help her.
Lily asked me, “Will I see Mom again?” one night as we ate dinner. “Yes, sweetheart, when she’s ready,” I said after taking a big breath. You’re safe with me until then.”
I knew right then that I had made the right choice. I helped a little girl who needed it, and she gave me a new sense of purpose in return. When I looked into her eyes, I knew this was the start of an amazing journey.
