Korben White, who is sixteen years old, made news at his high school prom when he wore a stunning red ballgown that showed how confident and unique he was. Nina Green, his mom, wrote a touching post on social media about how brave and open-hearted her son was.
Young drag queen Korben, who goes by the stage name Miss Frou Frou, had dreamed of this moment since he was 12. He wanted to go to prom as himself, mixing manly and feminine styles, because of the American actor Billy Porter. Korben stole the show in his sequined suit top and long red skirt.
The Archbishop Sancroft High School in Norfolk was happy to see Korben’s bold style. Once he got there, everyone cheered, and his mother was so proud. She said, “Everyone has been very helpful.” “If you let your child be who they are, you’ll get nothing but the best out of them.”
Millions of people saw the post, and people had a lot of different emotions to it. Many people liked Korben’s confidence and his mother’s steadfast support, but some didn’t. Judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race Michelle Visage called Korben a “STAR,” and other parents were moved to share stories about their own children who cross-dress.
Even though Nina Green is getting hate mail online, she is still standing by her support. She went to London Pride with Korben and shared love and acceptance. “Accept your kids as they are,” is her clear message. Korben’s story is a strong reminder of how important it is to be yourself and to love your parents.
People are inspired by Korben’s story, but it also brings up important questions about social rules and acceptance. What do you think about teens being themselves by wearing non-traditional clothes to prom? Add your voice and share your thoughts.
