What a Christmas surprise that changed my view

When I walked into our church on Christmas morning, it was warm and smelt like pine trees. I could also hear soft music playing in the background. The people in the church were dressed up for Sunday, and there was a calm, reverent air in the room. But then a woman in a bright red Christmas jumper walked in and everyone looked at her.

At first, I was shocked by the bold outfit she chose. The jumper had ornaments, animals and snowflakes on it, and it didn’t seem right in the church, which was a sad place. I thought things were going well at first, but as I watched her walk down the aisle and smile at everyone, I changed my mind.

Even though there were whispers and sideways looks, the woman seemed totally at ease. Her happiness and confidence made everyone around her feel good, and as the service went on, I felt drawn to her energy. As the choir started to sing “Silent Night,” she leaned forward to light a candle. The soft golden light on her face made her look beautiful. I realised at that moment that her jumper wasn’t something to take my attention away from; it was a sign of happiness and celebration.

As I thought about the woman’s brave choice, I realised that Christmas isn’t about following rules or being like everyone else. In its purest form, it’s about joy. It’s about enjoying the season in a way that is true to you, even if that means putting on a bright red jumper. It was clear from the woman’s confidence and happiness that Christmas is a time to feel, share, and show yourself, not follow rules or traditions.

As I walked out of the church and into the cool morning air, I was thankful for the woman’s brave action. She taught me something I didn’t expect: that sometimes the bravest actions have the deepest meanings. And happiness can look a lot like a bright red Christmas jumper shining in the dim light of candles.
