Jason was the best football player in high school, and everyone admired him. On the other hand, I was the shy girl who liked to read. Sarah, my best friend, would often tell me to talk to him, but I was too shy.
Over the years, I changed into a strong, successful woman. I got contacts instead of glasses, braces for a perfect smile, and a more put-together outfit instead of nerdy clothes.
I heard a voice I knew one day while I was food shopping. “Emma? Is that you?” It was Jason. He looked a little older but still good-looking. He asked me to come to dinner after we talked about our lives.
We went to a fancy place for dinner, and Jason seemed nice at first. But as the night went on, his mask broke, showing a shocking secret. He put a hair on my plate on purpose to get a free meal and then bragged about how smart he was.
I was shocked. The boy I looked up to as a child was now a man who did shady things to make money. The plans for our dinner date went horribly wrong, and I couldn’t wait to get away.
I realised how much I’d changed since high school as I thought about our meeting. Jason, on the other hand, was stuck in the past and wanted to be like how he used to be.
The next day, I told my coworker Mia my story, and we both laughed at how silly it all was. She told me, “You dodged a bullet,” and I agreed wholeheartedly.
I learnt an important lesson from my time with Jason: the people we look up to as kids don’t always turn out to be what we thought they would be. The ending made me happy and proud of the person I had become.
