As Mary got ready for the fancy anniversary party her husband John had planned, her heart was racing with joy. After ten years of marriage, she knew that John’s careful planning would make this night one she would never forget.
Mary saw family, friends, and business partners as she came down the stairs. She looked beautiful in her new dress and red shoes. But one person stood out: Lauren, John’s sister, who seemed to enjoy making things hard for Mary.
For a long time, Mary didn’t like how needy and demanding Lauren was, but she had learned to hold her tongue. The things Lauren does tonight, though, would be too much.
John made a toast and gave Mary a strange box. Mary couldn’t wait to open it. She thought it was a wonderful gift, but it was just a rag. When the room went quiet, Mary’s shock turned to shame.
It got worse when Lauren laughed and made rude comments about the expensive ring John had given her for her birthday. Mary was even more angry when John tried to play down the situation by saying it was just a joke.
Mary calmed down and put the rag down because she didn’t want to ruin the night. But Lauren kept making things worse by asking people if they liked John’s “gift.” She was cocky for a short time, though.
Just as it should have, Lauren slipped on the floor and fell, breaking her expensive bracelet and ripping her dress. The room laughed out loud, and everyone was glad when Lauren quickly left.
The doorbell rang as the door shut behind her. The real gift for Mary had arrived: a beautiful diamond ring that made her gasp.
It was true that karma had worked its magic, making Lauren more humble and restoring Mary’s honor. Mary knew that this date would be one to remember as they partied into the night.
