When perfectionism gets out of hand, it can be a wedding nightmare.

Every bride dreams of a beautiful wedding day, but one couple’s desire for perfection has made people very angry. A soon-to-be bride asked for help on Reddit’s “Am I The Asshole” thread and shared a long list of strict rules for their wedding guests.

The couple’s rules were supposed to make sure that everything went smoothly on the wedding day, but they caused a lot of cancellations and complaints. Guests were not allowed to bring phones to the service or dinner, unless it was an emergency. Most people knew why ceremonies were not allowed, but many thought the dinner rule was too strict.

Parents who wanted to check on their kids were told that an exception would only be made in life-or-death scenarios. The bride argued, “It’s not an emergency to check with your kids.” You’ll know if something bad happens.

Another rule said that everyone had to wear black. Men had to wear tuxedos and women had to wear dresses. Guests were upset by this order, especially the bride’s aunt, who had recently lost her husband and found comfort in wearing bright clothes.

More trouble started when bridesmaids were told to keep their weight steady and wear dresses that had already been bought. The bride’s mother was very angry and thought the wedding would fail.

Guests started to back out, and girls said they might not show up. The flower girl couldn’t come because the maid of honor wouldn’t leave her daughter with a babysitter.

Reddit users mostly thought the couple was unreasonable and stressed that while they were free to plan their wedding, guests were not required to agree to their ridiculous requests.

Everyone agreed: the couple’s rigid rules were driving their friends and family away. People who commented asked if trying to be perfect was worth putting relationships at risk.

This wedding saga makes me think about some important things. Where does reasonable planning end and unreasonable power begin? Should guests put their own wants first or follow the couple’s plans?

There is one thing that is certain: this wedding will be remembered, but maybe not for the reasons the couple wanted.
