When I got married to Logan, things looked good at first, but it became hard for us to have a child. As I dealt with my feelings of failure, Logan wandered off to focus on his own things.
My best friend Lola talked me into taking a break and getting some fresh air last night. I thought I had found a short-term escape at a cosy jazz club. When Lola saw Logan, her eyes got really big, and she whispered, “Natasha, is that Logan?”
When I turned around, I saw my husband laughing with a young woman named Brenda wrapped over his shoulders. My heart sank. They were in front of me when my body moved on its own.
I can still picture Logan’s smile. “I’m in love with someone else,” he said without feeling bad about it. “It’s over.”
When I got home the next morning, my things were all over the lawn. Logan and Brenda stood on the porch and smirked as they threw me out.
But as I was putting my things in my car, a sleek black BMW pulled up. The granddad of Logan, Mr. Duncan, walked out with a confused look on his face.
As he looked around at what he saw, his face turned angry. He yelled, “What’s going on here?”
Logan tried to explain, but Mr. Duncan stopped him. “You threw out my favourite granddaughter-in-law and are now living with that… woman.” What went wrong?”
Every time she spoke, Logan’s face got paler. “This house belongs to me,” Mr. Duncan said next. To help you start a family, I let you live here. You’re out, though, if you treat Natasha like she’s not important. Starting right away.”
When Mr. Duncan said, “Natasha will stay; you will leave,” Logan’s world fell apart. I’m ending our conversation now.
I saw Mr. Duncan turn to me as Logan and Brenda ran away. “Take this house as yours.” “I’ll take care of the paperwork.”
Mr. Duncan kept his word over the next few days. Logan crawled back and begged me to help his grandpa, but I enjoyed the moment. “Nope!” “You made the bed, now lie down in it!” I slammed the door shut, leaving him to deal with the results of his deeds.
I realised that justice can come from strange places as I looked back. And that justice for me was Mr. Duncan, who was an unusual ally during a time of betrayal.
