Local investigators suggested that Miller’s death may have been the result of “possible intoxication after apparently ingesting some food.” However, Juan Pablo Alvarado, an official with Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigative Agency, emphasized that the preliminary cause of death has yet to be confirmed via autopsy and toxicology analysis.

Brett Gardner, a 41-year-old former outfielder, spent his entire 14-year Major League Baseball career with the Yankees. Since his retirement in 2021, he has been spending more time with his family in South Carolina.

The Yankees offered their support for Gardner and his family, releasing a statement that expressed their grief and condolences. “Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner,” the team said.

The statement went on to describe Miller as having “a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature.” The team also emphasized their unconditional love and support for the Gardner family, respecting their desire for privacy during this difficult time.
