Groom Killed And Wife Hospitalized Just Minutes After Leaving Their Wedding
A groom was killed and his wife was hospitalized just minutes after leaving their wedding.
What should have been the happiest day of their lives ended in unimaginable tragedy when a newlywed groom was killed and his bride seriously injured just moments after they left their wedding celebration.
Family members say the couple had just exchanged vows and were beginning their honeymoon journey when the helicopter carrying them crashed into a wooded area in Georgia, per the New York Post.
The devastating incident has left loved ones mourning the loss of a young husband while praying for the recovery of his new wife, who survived the crash despite being trapped in the wreckage for hours.
Now, federal investigators are working to determine exactly what caused the aircraft to go down.
Newlyweds were heading off on their honeymoon
The crash happened on the evening of May 29 in Dawson County, Georgia.
According to authorities, per ABC30, a Robinson R66 helicopter carrying three people went down shortly after departing from a wedding celebration.
The passengers were later identified as newlyweds Dave Fiji and Jesni Fiji, along with pilot Nikhil Nargundkar.
The couple had reportedly planned a dramatic helicopter departure from their wedding before continuing on to Peachtree-DeKalb Airport, where they were expected to begin their honeymoon.
Instead, tragedy struck only minutes after takeoff.
Emergency crews were dispatched to reports of a downed aircraft at around 10:35 p.m., but reaching the crash site proved challenging because the helicopter had come down in a densely wooded area.
Rescue teams reportedly used off-road vehicles and chainsaws to access the wreckage.
Family says it had been a ‘perfect wedding’
Loved ones described the ceremony as a joyful occasion attended by hundreds of guests.
“It was a beautiful wedding and a perfect wedding,” Dave’s father, George Fiji, told local media. “We couldn’t ask for anything more.”
According to family members, there were initial concerns about the weather before the helicopter departed.
Dave, who worked as a pilot himself for Endeavor Air, reportedly expressed worries about visibility conditions.
His father recalled, per MSN: “He said, ‘I wouldn’t fly, we would not fly in this visibility.’”
The family said fog and rain had delayed the flight, and there had even been discussion about cancelling it altogether.
Dave’s mother, Phebah Fiji, explained: “Initially, it was going to be called off because of weather concerns; however, when the chopper came in, the pilot was very confident that it wouldn’t be an issue, even though it had started raining.”
She added that because her son did not fly helicopters professionally, he relied on the pilot’s judgment regarding the conditions.
Investigators later revealed the helicopter struck tall trees before crashing into the forest below.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said there was no post-impact fire and that investigators had recovered all major components of the aircraft.
Officials are now examining weather conditions, pilot information, maintenance records, radar data, air traffic communications, and other evidence to determine exactly what happened.
An NTSB spokesperson also confirmed that meteorologists are conducting a weather study as part of the investigation, Fox reports.
Preliminary information suggests rain showers, low cloud cover, fog, and possible thunderstorms were present in the area around the time of the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.

Groom and pilot did not survive
The crash claimed the lives of both Dave Fiji and pilot Nikhil Nargundkar.
Dave’s family described him as a deeply religious and kind-hearted young man who had been looking forward to beginning married life.
“He was a precious child, he was a gift from God for us,” George Fiji said. “He was a God-fearing child. So handsome, beautiful.”
The couple had reportedly known each other for a decade after meeting through church.
His mother said there had been something special about the wedding day itself.
“Both of them told us they could sense the presence of God at the altar, a tangible presence of God,” Phebah said. “There was a special glow and glory over his face that we couldn’t explain. And it was not just us who noticed.”
Bride survived but faced a horrifying ordeal
While Dave and the pilot were killed, Jesni survived the crash.
According to family members, she regained consciousness beneath the wreckage and made a heartbreaking discovery.
“She said when she woke up, she was under the rubble,” George Fiji explained. “She woke up and saw him lying on her chest.”
Jesni, who works as a nurse, reportedly checked on her husband immediately.
“She herself is a nurse. When she touched him, she called out to him. He was already cold.”
Family members said she remained trapped for several hours before rescuers were able to reach and free her.
Remarkably, she escaped without any broken bones. Instead, she suffered bruising and cuts and is expected to make a physical recovery.
Emotionally, however, her loved ones say the loss has been devastating.
“She’s devastated, but slowly, slowly she’s getting better,” George Fiji said.
Dave’s mother added that Jesni had described her husband as ‘kind,’ ‘gentle,’ and ‘selfless.’
Investigators searching for answers
The helicopter involved in the crash was owned by Atlanta-based Prestige Helicopters.
Company representatives have described the incident as unprecedented and noted that the route had reportedly been flown numerous times before.
For now, investigators are focused on determining what caused the aircraft to strike trees before crashing.
Federal authorities are also seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the flight or captured footage that could assist with the investigation.
The National Transportation Safety Board has confirmed the helicopter struck tall trees before crashing into a wooded area near Dawsonville.
Investigators are reviewing weather conditions, aircraft records, pilot information, and flight data. Officials have not yet released a final cause of the crash.
The Dawson County coroner identified the pilot as Nikhil Nargundkar, while family members say Jesni Fiji is expected to be released from hospital in the coming days.
